Chestnut St., Columbus, Ohio." Manchester is located approximately 74 miles upstream of Cincinnati, Ohio. Originally called Massie's Station, it was the first permanent white settlement within the Virginia Military District, built along the Ohio River in 1790 and was built near the "Three Islands." Native Americans used these islands to attack settlers traveling down the Ohio River. Nathanial Massie offered nineteen men property if they would settle in the town. He used the settlement as a base for his survey work in the district. In 1791, Massie's Station became known as Manchester, Ohio. Massie named the community after Manchester, England. It was the fourth permanent settlement established in the Northwest Territory. By 1791, residents had completely encircled the community with a stockade to provide protection from Native Americans. Manchester served as the county seat for Adams County from 1797 to 1803, when residents moved local government to West Union. Located on the Ohio River across from the slaveholding state of Kentucky, Manchester proved an important community along the Underground Railroad. The larger of the two remaining islands is called Manchester, and the smaller is called Tow Head. They are now part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuges under the supervision of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The Ohio River is the largest tributary of the Mississippi River and is about 981 miles long. It begins at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers in Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It forms the border between Ohio and West Virginia, as well as Ohio and Kentucky, Indiana and Kentucky and Illinois and Kentucky. It joins the Mississippi near Cairo, Illinois. View on Ohio Memory.

Erected: Sept. 23, 1938" Nathaniel Massie was a frontier surveyor in the Ohio Country who became a prominent land owner, politician, and soldier. Description: This image is a photograph of a cabinet card portrait of a woman. The cabinet card was propped against a rail or post before the photograph was taken. The unidentified woman in the cabinet card portrait is wearing a square-necked dress or blouse. Her hair is pinned back, but a loose curl hangs down the back of her neck. The photographer may have been Reverend Henry E. Cooke (1857-1915), son of the prominent American banker and financier Jay Cooke (1821-1905). Henry E. Cooke acted as his family's historian and photographer. He created or compiled poetry, sketches, humorous anecdotes, and several thousand photographs that documented three generations of the Cooke family. Henry E. Cooke graduated from Princeton and had his first posting at Trinity Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. He later became the head of the Episcopal Church in San Francisco. After only a year, he returned to Ohio and eventually became head of the Church in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Esther Clarkson Russell (1863-1945) and had two children, Henry Eleutheros Cooke (Harry) and Russell Cooke. Gilbert & Bacon, the portrait studio established by Philadelphia photographers Charles M. Gilbert (b. ca. 1848) and William F. Bacon (ca. 1843-1900), operated ca. 1874-ca. 1929. The firm specialized in celebrity portraiture and photographed actors, baseball players, and members of high society. Following the death of Bacon in 1900, the firm continued in business under the management of Gilbert and Bacon's son Frank T. into the early 20th century. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads: "Trollope's House." In 1828 Mrs. Frances Trollope arrived in Cincinnati from England, followed later by her husband Thomas. She built a brick Bazaar at 311 E. Third Street in order to sell knickknacks from Manchester and Birmingham. Known by locals as "Trollope's Folly," the building had an unusual mixture of architectural features, including Gothic, Grecian, Turkish, and Egyptian styles. Inside, the building had an exhibition gallery, ballroom and two salons. Due to financial difficulties the Trollopes returned to England in 1830, where Frances Trollope wrote the first of many books. Titled 'Domestic Manners of the Americans,' her first book was a derogatory tale about her experience in the United States. Her sons, Thomas Jr. and Anthony, also later became novelists. Following Frances Trollope's departure, the Bazaar in Cincinnati housed the Ohio Mechanics Society, and in later years was a brothel before being demolished in 1881. View on Ohio Memory.
